Do I need a visa to visit Malawi?
Most visitors to Malawi need a visa, but the process is straightforward. Citizens of SADC member states, the EU, the US, the UK, and several other countries can obtain a visa on arrival at Lilongwe International Airport or major land borders.
The standard tourist visa costs $50 USD (or equivalent) and is valid for 30 days. You can also apply for an e-visa through the Malawi Immigration website before departure, which speeds up the arrival process.

New visa rules from November 2025
Malawi changed its visa policy on 21 November 2025. The new rules are based on reciprocity:
- If your country allows Malawian nationals to enter visa-free, you can enter Malawi without a visa using only your valid passport.
- If your country requires Malawian nationals to obtain a visa before entry, you now need to apply for a Malawian visa before travel, regardless of previous visa-free arrangements.
Exempt countries
Citizens of these countries do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days:
- SADC members: Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, Angola, DRC, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, Seychelles
- Others: Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi

Visa on arrival vs e-visa
Visa on arrival is available at Lilongwe International Airport and major land borders. Bring US dollars in cash for payment. Processing takes 10–30 minutes.
E-visa can be applied for online at evisa.gov.mw before departure. You’ll receive an approval letter to present at immigration. This speeds up the arrival process significantly.
