How do I register a SIM card in Malawi?
SIM registration in Malawi is mandatory for all mobile phones. Both major networks, Airtel Malawi and TNM, require registration before activating a SIM card. The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) enforces this rule strictly.
What you need
- A valid passport or Malawi National ID
- A passport-sized photo (some offices take this on-site)
- The SIM card you wish to register
For foreigners, your passport is sufficient. No Malawi ID is required.
Step-by-step process
- Visit a service center — Go to any Airtel or TNM service center or authorized dealer
- Fill out the registration form — Staff will provide the form
- Biometric capture — Staff takes your photo and fingerprints
- SIM activation — Your SIM is activated within minutes
The whole process takes 10–20 minutes.
Cost
- SIM card: MWK 500–2,000 depending on the package
- Registration: Free
- Replacement: MWK 1,000–2,000 if you lose your SIM
Tourist SIM options
For visitors, a tourist SIM with data bundles is the most practical option:

- Both networks have good coverage in cities and major towns.
Tourist SIMs are available at Lilongwe International Airport and service centers in major cities. Bring your passport.

Network coverage
- Airtel: Best coverage in rural areas, 4G in major cities
- TNM: Strong in urban areas, 4G in Lilongwe and Blantyre
