How do I get a TPIN from MRA in Malawi?
A Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN) is a unique number issued by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) for tax purposes. You need one to register a business, open a bank account, import goods, or file taxes.
Registration is free and done through the Msonkho Online portal at mra.mw. Processing takes 1-3 business days.
Who needs a TPIN
- Anyone starting a business in Malawi
- Employees whose employer requires it
- People importing or exporting goods
- Anyone with income above the tax-free threshold
- Companies applying for government contracts

Required documents
For individuals:
- National ID card (mandatory for Malawian citizens)
- Proof of address (utility bill or bank statement)
- Passport-sized photograph
For businesses:
- Business registration certificate from CRIPC
- National ID of the business owner(s)
- Proof of business address
- Memorandum and Articles of Association (for companies)
After you get your TPIN
Once registered, you must:
- File tax returns annually (income tax) or quarterly (VAT if registered)
- Keep records of all income and expenses
- Pay taxes on time to avoid penalties
- Update MRA if your business details change
MRA uses the Msonkho Online portal for filing and payments. You can also use the mobile app (Android and iOS) to file returns and check your tax status.
VAT registration
If your annual turnover exceeds MWK 10 million, you must register for Value Added Tax (VAT) separately. This is done through the same Msonkho Online portal. VAT-registered businesses charge 16.5% VAT on taxable goods and services.
Common mistakes
- Not registering at all - MRA is getting stricter. Unregistered businesses face penalties and back taxes.
- Registering late - you should register before starting business operations, not after.
- Wrong category - make sure you register as the correct entity type (individual vs. company).
- Not filing returns - even if you have no income to declare, you must file nil returns.
