How do I register a company name in Malawi?

Register a company name in Malawi through the Companies Registration and Intellectual Property Centre (CRIPC) at cripc.gov.mw. Since April 2026, CRIPC handles all business registrations online.

A name search and reservation costs MWK 5,000. Full registration of a sole proprietorship costs MWK 10,000-20,000 depending on whether you attach a partnership agreement.

Name rules

Your business name must:

  • Be unique - not similar or identical to an existing registered business, company, or trademark
  • Not include restricted words - “Limited,” “Company,” “Ltd,” “Co,” or any word that could be misleading
  • Not include protected names - government names, reserved words
  • Not include a partner’s personal name unless it’s the full trading name

CRIPC checks name availability during the online application. If your chosen name is taken, you’ll need to pick another.

Steps to register

  1. Create an account on cripc.gov.mw using your National ID, passport, or foreign resident permit. You need a working email address.

  2. Search for your business name through the online portal. Cost: MWK 5,000.

  3. Complete the application form online. Enter your business details, owner information, and business activity.

  4. Sign the application electronically through the portal.

  5. Pay the registration fee:

    • Sole proprietorship without agreement: MWK 10,000
    • Sole proprietorship with agreement: MWK 20,000
    • Partnership: MWK 20,000
  6. Submit and wait for processing. Sole proprietorships are usually approved within days.

  7. Download your certificate from the portal once approved.

What you need

  • National ID (Malawian citizens) or passport/resident permit (foreigners)
  • Valid email address
  • Business name (check availability first)
  • Business activity description
  • Physical address of the business
  • TPIN from MRA (for companies, not sole proprietorships at registration stage)

Company vs. sole proprietorship

Sole proprietorship is the simplest and cheapest. One owner, minimal paperwork, quick approval. Good for small businesses and freelancers.

Private limited company (Ltd) is better if you need liability protection, want to bring in investors, or plan to grow significantly. Registration costs more (MWK 25,000-50,000) and requires more documents (Memorandum and Articles of Association).

Partnership is for two or more owners sharing profits and liabilities. Needs a partnership agreement.

Post-registration

After registering your business name, you still need:

  • TPIN from MRA (tax registration)
  • Business license from your local district council
  • Sector-specific licenses if applicable (food handling, tourism, construction, etc.)
